International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women

Message of the Secretary-General for International Woman's Day on 8th March' 2009...

In the 10 years since the General Assembly designated 25 November as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, the circle of engagement has widened. More groups and individuals, including men and boys, are getting involved in efforts to prevent and address this heinous violation of women’s human rights. There has also been significant progress at the national level as many countries have adopted laws and comprehensive action plans.

However, much work lies ahead. In every country, women and girls continue to be plagued by violence, causing tremendous suffering. Such violence undermines development, generates instability, and makes peace that much harder to achieve. We must demand accountability for the violations, and take concrete steps to end impunity. We must listen to and support the survivors.

Our goal is clear: an end to these inexcusable crimes - whether it is the use of rape as a weapon of war, domestic violence, sex trafficking, so-called “honour” crimes or female genital mutilation/cutting. We must address the roots of this violence by eradicating discrimination and changing the mindsets that perpetuate it.

The “UNiTE to End Violence against Women” campaign that I launched last year is galvanizing action across the United Nations system. It calls for all countries to put in place, by the year 2015, strong laws, multi-sectoral action plans, preventive measures, data collection, and systematic efforts to address sexual violence in conflict situations. I invite Governments, organizations and individuals to join us in this Campaign. I have also just launched a Network of Men Leaders to strengthen our advocacy.

The United Nations General Assembly’s support for the creation of a new gender equality entity will also bolster our work. The new entity will promote gender equality and the empowerment of women, and hold the United Nations system itself accountable for supporting measures to eliminate discrimination against women and end violence against them.

Women around the world are the very linchpin keeping families, communities, and nations together. On this International Day, let us reaffirm our commitment to women’s human rights; let us invest more resources in countering this violence; and let us do all it takes to end these horrific assaults once and for all.

International Women's Day 2010 Theme

Each year around the world, International Women's Day (IWD) is celebrated on March 8. Hundreds of events occur not just on this day but throughout March to mark the economic, political and social achievements of women.

Organisations, governments and women's groups around the world choose different themes each year that reflect global and local gender issues.

Some years have seen global IWD themes honoured around the world, while in other years groups have preferred to 'localise' their own themes to make them more specific and relevant.

THEME: So while many people may think there is one global theme each year, this is not always correct. It is completely up to each country and group as to what appropriate theme they select.

Let Go and Feel Better...

Many times in life we come across situations that are beyond our control. At such times the best thing to do is to, LET GO...

Sometimes life does not work the way we plan it to be. It takes it own course making us feel helpless and drained. We might want to see instant changes or get back what we lost, but it might only feel like going against the tide. Are you too facing the odds in life? Sometimes it is better to keep your problems aside and let go.

Life is always in a state of flux. It is changing every moment turning the present into past. This makes it very important to live life to the fullest and cherish each moment of life. Although you cannot be jumping in glee when something goes wrong, you can surely try to handle yourself better.

If you lost a loved one:-
Losing someone close or a beloved one at the hands of death is one of the most traumatising experiences. But you have to remember that it has happened. You cannot bring back the person. But you have to live your life. You will have to take a day at a time and be kind to yourself. Would your loved one like you to be sad everyday? Remember them but do not live in the past. Letting go can help you keep away painful memories. Spring clean your life and begin anew. Do not push yourself hard but make small changes in life.

If you had a break up:-
Break-ups make you feel like your world has come to an end. But it is not so. Begging for second chances, crying and wishing you got back with your partner can be really hurtful. You might want to show them what they have lost. But do not do so. Instead feel that it was for the best, even if it feels tough right now. Begin your life on your own. Get going and find more meaning to yourself. Forgive your partner and do not dwell on the past. Avoid the hang-outs your partner frequents. Let go all that you have done, shared and planned together. You will feel relieved. Carrying all that extra baggage will only increase the burden.

If you did not get desired grades:-
So what if you failed or got lower grades? You can check where you lacked and try once again with even more dedication. Let go your uneasiness and do not think about what everyone else will think or say. Correct your mistakes and try harder. Avoid thinking of ending your life due to pressure around you. You do not have to be like everyone else. Set your own trends and take things calmly. Get those text books and start reading today. Ask for help and people will willingly help if you are stuck.

If someone cheats on you:-
Your partner cheated on you and you do not know what to do. You want to save the relation, you do not want to hurt them and you keep thinking why it happened to you. If this has happened to you, you need help. Every relation and situation differs. You have to take a decision and stand by it. Once you take a decision, to be or not to be with your partner, stick to it. If you were to be with your partner build on the trust and work on your relationship. Do not think of how they cheated you. Let the past be the past.
If you decided to walk out then do so and do not keep calling and texting. If you call it quits, then keep it so. Living on your own can seem difficult at first. Be strong and give yourself time. Stay open to live life once again.

If you got fired from your job:-
Did your boss fire you from your job? Do not let this upset you or lose motivation. Try again for a new job or start working from home. Stop brooding over it and feeling like a loser. As the saying goes, 'Quitters never win, Winners never quit'. Do you know that Harry Potter Series author JK Rowling was also fired from her job? So let go and think that life has given you one more chance. If life shuts one door on you, it opens up ten others. There a million opportunities, go grab them.

How to Let Go...
Letting go may be difficult for many. But it is not impossible. It just needs a little focus. You will have to give yourself time but keep making small efforts to let go. Even Rome was not built in a day. Life is too short to remain sad everyday. Rather than being a victim of the situation, let go. Take charge of your life because you deserve to be happy.

* Ask yourself what will you get by holding on to the problem
* Avoid thinking and wishing, 'what if it were'
* Build your self-esteem
* Take up a new hobby or something that you stopped pursuing
* Count your blessings
* Avoid calling and punching messages
* Follow a balanced diet
* Read, listen to music or go for a brisk walk
* Write a journal
* Discover yourself, you may be surprised
* Avoid negative thoughts
* Begin exercising daily, if you are stressed
* Consult a psychiatrist or therapist if you cannot handle it alone

Whenever life hits you with a rude shock, just think how you will make the best of it. Every problem is a gateway to new opportunities. Get rid of excess baggage and give your life a makeover. Whenever there is something that makes you feel you cannot do anything about it, you must remember its time to, simply let go.

NOT A STORY BUT A TRUE INCIDENT

An Indian man walks into a bank in New York City and asks for the loan officer. He tells the loan officer that he is going to India on business for two weeks and needs to borrow $5,000.

The bank officer tells him that the bank will need some form of security for the loan, so the Indian man hands over the keys and documents of new Ferrari parked on the street in front of the bank. He produces the title and everything checks out. The loan officer agrees to accept the car as collateral for the loan.

The bank's president and its officers all enjoy a good laugh at the Indian for using a $250,000 Ferrari as collateral against a $5,000 loan. An employee of the bank then drives the Ferrari into the bank's underground garage and parks it there.

Two weeks later, the Indian returns, repays the $5,000 and the interest, which comes to $15.41.
The loan officer says,
"Sir, we are very happy to have had your business, and this transaction has worked out very nicely, but we are a little puzzled. While you were away, we checked you out and found that you are a multi millionaire. What puzzles us is, why would you bother to borrow "$5,000”?

The Indian replies:
"Where else in New York City can I park my car for two weeks for only $15.41 and expect it to be there when I return".

A blind boy sat on the steps of a building with a hat by his feet. He held up a sign which said: "I am blind, please help." There were only a few coins in the hat.

Both signs told people that the boy was blind. But the first sign simply said the boy was blind. The second sign told people that they were so lucky that they were not blind. Should we be surprised that the second sign was more effective?

CANCER (JUNE 21 - JULY 21)
Considering how charming, caring and kind you are, you dislike unpleasant scenes, much less creating one yourself. You have great tolerance and rarely get provoked into losing your temper. If someone is unreasonable or trying to create trouble, you are more likely to walk away quietly. But that does not mean you do not have a temper. When angry, in your effort to control your emotions, you tremble, your hands get sweaty and sometimes you fumble for words. Tears roll down your eyes easily and the opponent is touched by your innocence and will seek an apology immediately.
LEO (JULY 22 - AUGUST 21)
If anyone has total control over their emotions, it is you. But then, you can be described as stiff, cold and uncaring. You are known to lack spontaneity but you really don't care about opinions. You don't like to create scenes and will never accept invitations to a party where you suspect the presence of an unruly lot. But your very presence seems challenging to some and they take vicarious pleasure in your disquiet. When angry you can use critical language. A dressing down can humiliate your opponent, causing a strain between both of you forever.
VIRGO (AUGUST 22 - SEPTEMBER 21)
Most of you are gentle and have full control over your emotions but those of you given to temper tantrums can certainly get violent. When see things with rage, you yell and shout and tend to break things lying close at hand. You can even harm yourself by banging your hands on a glass top table or wall. You should never get into any argument, for you are a sore loser. You feel that others are trying to persecute you and don't quite respect your opinions. When hurt, you can also hold grudges forever.
LIBRA (SEPTEMBER 22 - OCTOBER 22)
Did someone say that you are the charmers of the zodiac? Well, it's true. Few have ever seen you ruffled or angry. You are very conscious of your image, and you believe that anger distorts your face and personality. You also think you are above things like anger. But wait before you get into self-congratulatory mood. Your family or those very close to you know you better. You have an unmatched temper amongst all the zodiac signs, and what makes it worse is your capacity to justify it.
SCORPIO (OCTOBER 23 - NOVEMBER 21)
Of course you don't lose your cool. But your very demeanor (manner) projects haughtiness (arrogance, pride), pride and grand disdain (disregard) for lesser mortals (human). Others are often found saying that anger sits on your nose and you are raring to give your piece mind to the first person who try to be funny with you. You are selective in the choice of your friends, and have a low tolerance for the superfluous (extra) types. Your tongue-lashing (attack) is generally in a soft hissing tone for when you scream, your voice tends to get shrill and loud and you do hate drawing attention to yourself! When upset, you are angrier with yourself for having shown weakness, for the last thing that Scorpio wants to show is being out of control.
SAGITTARIUS (NOVEMBER 22 - DECEMBER 20)
You are insensible and generally have no complete control over your emotions. You do get angry quickly and others marvel at your anger levels even when provoked. Actually, you get tongue-tied when angry and you will remove your anger waiting for the other person to calm down. Then you will reason with your opponent and convince the other person in a very gentle manner that the whole thing was just his mistake. You're also likely to totally sever ties with someone when you're upset with them.

Few will believe that a hardcore practical and materialistic person like you is capable of sensitivity and genuine emotions. But then, there are times that even you cannot control your temper. Under such circumstances you can shout and scream, more with frustration at the situation than with anger at any particular person. You are noble and kind and dislike losing control over your emotions. It is very rare for you to get angry. You are also the pacifier in situations that involve arguments. It is always your endeavor to be perfect and socially correct in your behavior and attitude, but if misunderstood and slighted you can give in to an angry outburst. The only thing that can be said about you dreamers is that you appear even more attractive when angry. You are very sensitive to others' feelings, so you rarely hurt them. Telephone Etiquette

Below are some normal telephone etiquette which we should follow. I don't know you all follow these all or not. But I always fail to follow most of these. Thats why I wrote this post at least to remind some of them.

Placing a Call
* Keep the frequently called numbers handy
* Double check the name of the person you want to call
* Do you know how to pronounce his name?
* Is the phone number correct?
* Is it an appropriate time to call?
* Ask caller if it is OK or convenient to speak?
* If the line has disturbance, tell the caller that you will call back

Some Basic Guidelines
* Identify yourself when making a call
* Address the caller by his name in a courteous manner
* Keep conversation brief
* Never be curt
* Never be impatient
* Listen carefully
* Do not interrupt
* Do not eat or chew something while speaking on phone
* If you wish to put the caller on hold, request his permission to do so
* Close your conversation with an appropriate salutation
* Let the caller hang up first
* When you receive a call, pick up the phone within three rings
* Answer the call
* In case of missed calls, return the call within a reasonable period of time

While Speaking
* Prepare and plan the contents and sequence of your communication/conversation
* Speak slowly
* Pronounce words correctly
* Don't mumble, speak clearly
* Use good mannerly language
* Don't be crude in your expressions
* Use appropriate salutations at appropriate times during the conversation
* Use phrases/words like: I appreciate your assistance, Thank you, May I request you, etc

Placing Call on Hold
* Request caller if you can keep on hold
* Show courtesy in your communication
* In case it is taking long time, keep coming back to caller and tell reasons of the delay
* Tell the duration of wait time or delay and ask caller if he will like to be put on hold for that much duration
* Offer to call back if the delay is more and caller does not want to be put on hold for that long

Wrong Numbers
* If you reach a wrong number and you are told that it was a wrong number, express regret
* If some one calls you by mistake, inform the caller politely that he reached a wrong number
* In case the caller has reached you while trying to reach another person in your organization, help him out by giving the correct phone number if you can find out or transfer the call to the right person

Managing Angry Callers
* Listen his problem or complaint carefully
* Do not interrupt him, let him finish the whole thing first
* Do not show off or act smart
* Do not say, "you are wrong"
* Empathize with him
* After he has finished, if appropriate, you may use the expressions like: I am sorry for the inconvenience or I appreciate what you are saying and in your place I would have been upset too
* You should be good in your area of work and investigate about his complaint or problem and solve it
* If you can not solve immediately, tell him the process of solving the problem and how much time it would take to solve
* Do not mislead him
* Call him back when you have the solution/information and give him that communication at the earliest possible; this feedback is important

Cell Phone Etiquette
* Do not try to impress the people around by flaunting your latest gizmo
* Do not use annoying, disturbing, jarring, funny ring tones
* Respond within three rings
* Don't shout over phone.
* Your volume level of speech should be such that it does not disturb the public
* Do not wear the ear piece when not using your cell phone
* Switch off cell phone or keep it at vibrate or silent mode at public places like school/college class room, hospital, theater, cinema hall/multiplex etc
* Switch off completely while traveling on an airplane
* Do not use cell phone while driving
* Do not ring people at in-appropriate timings, places or situations
* Do use cell phones in any emergency- that is the real use of cell phone
