A review of A Better India, A Better World...By N.R. Narayana Murthy

With one of the highest GDP growth rates in the world and an array of recent achievements in technology, industry and entrepreneurship, India strides confidently towards the future. But, in the world’s largest democracy, not everyone is equally fortunate. More than 300 million Indians are still prey to hunger, illiteracy and disease, and 51 per cent of India’s children are still undernourished.

What will it take for India to bridge this great divide? When will the fruits of development reach the poorest of the poor, and wipe the tears from the eyes of every man, woman and child, as Mahatma Gandhi had dreamt? And how should this, our greatest challenge ever, be negotiated?

In this extraordinarily inspiring and visionary book, N.R. Narayana Murthy, who pioneered, designed and executed the Global Delivery Model that has become the cornerstone of India’s success in information technology services outsourcing, shows us that a society working for the greatest welfare of the greatest number—samasta jananam sukhino bhavantu—must focus on two simple things: values and good leadership. Drawing on the remarkable Infosys story and the lessons learnt from the two decades of post-reform India, Narayana Murthy lays down the ground rules that must be followed if future generations are to inherit a truly progressive nation.

Built on Narayana Murthy’s lectures delivered around the world, A Better India: A Better World is a manifesto for the youth, the architects of the future, and a compelling argument for why a better India holds the key to a better world

India has least no. of corporate women leaders

Bangalore: Even though, whole world is celebrating 100th year of International Women's day, leading companies are failing to make the most of the talents of their female workforce.

According to the Corporate Gender Gap report brought out by the World Economic Forum (WEF) the U.S. led the way with the highest percentage of female employees (52 percent), while India had the lowest (23 percent). To tackle the problem, the WEF urged companies to do more to educate and utilise female talent.

Talking to BBC, Saadia Zahidi, Co-autor of the report said, "The findings of The Corporate Gender Gap Report are an alarm bell on International Women's Day that the corporate world is not doing enough to achieve gender equality. While a certain set of companies in Scandinavia, the US and the UK are indeed leaders in integrating women, the idea that most corporations have become gender-balanced or women-friendly is still a myth."

This report is based on a survey of 600 of the heads of Human Resources at the world's largest employers across 16 industries in 20 countries. The average number of women holding the CEO level position was a little less than five percent among the 600 companies surveyed. Finland (13 percent), Norway (12 percent), Turkey (12 percent), Italy (11 percent) and Brazil (11 percent) have the highest percentage of women CEOs in this sample. Most of the respondents blamed traditional and cultural practices for women being unable to move up the career ladder.

Professor Klaus Schwab, Founder and Executive Chairman of WEF said, "Women account for one-half of the potential talent base throughout the world and therefore, over time, a nation's competitiveness depends significantly on whether and how it educates and utilises its female talent."

Over 1500 aspiring women leaders throng Women Leadership Summit

Bangalore: Over 60 women technology leaders, that included leaders from leading MNCs like Google, Microsoft, Cisco, Intel, UST Global, Nokia, IBM, and many more, spoke at the siliconindia Women Leadership Summit on Friday the March 5, 2010.

Held on the eve of International Women's day, over 1500 women from all levels of the technology industry attended the event across six cities - Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Mumbai, New Delhi and Pune.

Some of the topics discussed at the Summit included: Stepping UP and Developing The Leader in YOU, Ascending the Corporate Ladder, Women's Work: The Great Juggling Act, Strategic Mentoring: The Power of Many, and The Women Entrepreneurs.

The day-long summit enabled women technology professionals to expand their network and help in professional development. Panelists enlightened the audience by sharing their experiences and tips on how to balance their personal and professional lives.

"While there is an increasing need to spend time for oneself and enjoy life, you should also understand that there's no more work-life balance. The word is work-life integration, and once you practice it, it's going to make things much smoother," said Alka Manchanda, Director of Engineering, Cisco.

Speakers also emphasized on how necessary it is for women who feel strongly about their careers to network more and be ready to let go of certain things so as to commit themselves to work.

All in all, the event was a great success. As Anita Guha, Manager, Leadership Development Programs, IBM said, "The event was a very good platform provided for women in the technology field to discuss their issues, hope more such events are organized."

The sponsors of the event included, Nokia, The Harbinger Group, Aegis, Aptech, Capco, The Park, Titan Raga, Sodexo, Steria, and Texas Instruments.

IIMs' high salary: The true story has a twist

Bangalore: As 2010 placement session of all the seven IIMs draws to close, it is being witnessed that the role offered to these graduates are more or less traditional and the salary packages are different than the packages which were making the buzz.

Following the placement session getting over, the debate started across the corner that which institute managed the best offer? An IIM-Ahmedabad student was tipped to have bagged an offer for Rs 1.4 crore two weeks ago, which has reportedly been breached by the Rs 1.6 crore offer made by a British investment bank at IIM-Calcutta.

But seeing these eye-popping numbers that have dominated headlines for some weeks, Saral Mukherjee, Placement Chief at the IIM-A said, "The truth is that the readers are being fed garbage" said Saral Mukherjee, Placement Chief at IIM-A.

This year, it has been totally different scenario, as the average salary offered by international banks at the IIM campuses are in the range of Rs.12-20 lakh per annum, while that offered by private sector banks is at just over Rs.9 lakh for IIM graduates. The top 30 percent were offered packages of Rs.12-15 lakh, the next 40 percent get salaries in the range of Rs.8-12 lakh and the remaining 30 percent get offers between Rs.5-8 lakh.

Supporting the range of salary being offered, K Ramkumar, Executive Director at ICICI Bank said, "For a person with less than three years of experience, whoever is paying more than Rs 15 lakh is doing a disservice to their organization." ICICI Bank has picked up 50 students from various IIMs so far this year.

It looks really bad to see that how wide is the gap between the lucky few with 'Rs.1 crore-plus' salaries and the rest of the crop from the same elite campuses who are stuck with salaries of Rs 50,000 per month.

Deemed universities concerned more about revenue

New Delhi: The Government appointed committee to review the functioning of deemed universities said that many private deemed universities are predominantly concerned about revenue generation rather than promoting academic and research activities.

The panel is headed by P N Tandon in its report, has also suggested setting up a national committee for fixing rational fee structure for deemed universities which can be reviewed from time to time. Most of the deemed universities have fee structure considerably higher than that recommended by the official fee structure committees established according to the Supreme Court directives. Many of them created their own fee structure committees to justify the exorbitant fees, according to the report which have been submitted to the apex court.

The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear the matter tomorrow. The committee has found 44 of the 130 deemed universities to be unfit for the status while another 44 have been found deficient in many areas. It has recommended that the 44 deficient deemed universities should be given three years time to rectify their short comings while the deemed university status should be withdrawn from those found unfit.

"Except a few public-funded institutions, quality research is not done in any of the deemed universities. Research, which is a major component of university, is not being carried out by these institutions," said the report. It also stated that there is not a single example of technology transfer, generation of patents and intellectual property in these institutions. Even though the UGC guidelines speak about holding an all-India entrance test to enroll students, the deemed universities never follow any common entrance examination. They conduct their own entrance which is very often restricted to limited geographical locations or regions.

The committee has recommended that the highest governing body of the deemed universities should be headed by the vice-chancellor and should include distinguished academics and professionals as its members.

Deemed Universities Students Need not to worry : Sibal

No Deemed University Student will suffer

Amid reports of violent protests in some places and widespread anxiety over the government’s move to derecognize 44 deemed universities, HRD minister Kapil Sibal on Tuesday sought to allay fears by promising no student would be left in the lurch.
The ministry’s task force has clearly delineated the roadmap for students in these institutions, ensuring that no one suffers, he said.
Meanwhile, students broke window panes, ransacked laboratories and burned furniture in a couple of blacklisted universities in Tamil Nadu, where a majority of the derecognized universities are situated.
Sibal’s assurance notwithstanding, many questions linger. For instance, the HRD ministry’s affidavit in the Supreme Court clearly states that even if the institutions concerned lose deemed university status, they remain colleges and will be affiliated to state universities. In case of
medical/dental colleges, they will seek affiliation from state medical universities.
Asked what if state governments refused to give affiliation, sources said the ministry would seek a relevant directive from the Supreme Court. ‘‘There are other methods also,’’ a source said.
Another question is what will happen to institutions that got deemed status by virtue of starting courses in new fields like nanotech. It seems students who enrolled for these niche disciplines can at best hope to pass out as regular graduates.
The HRD ministry is confident it has a foolproof case in the apex court. Highly placed sources said the 44 deemed universities should not hope that a clean chit by UGC's review committee (separate from the HRD ministry’s panel) can help them challenge the recommendation seeking removal of ‘deemed’ status.

Sources said under the UGC Act, the HRD ministry may or may not accept UGC’s recommendations.

‘‘Anyway, UGC had reviewed only a few parameters of these institutions whereas the HRD sministry’s review committee looked into the complete picture. It cannot be challenged,’’ a highly placed source said.

The degrees of those enrolled with ‘‘deemed universities’’ now staring at de-recognition will be of the institutions they may get attached to in future. ‘‘Students will eventually get the degree from the new university,’’ a source maintained.
Those who have already passed out from the "universities" in question need not worry.

‘‘They will not be affected because the deemed status was not taken away then,’’ sources said.

But the ministry is keen that the institutions are not able to give back-dated certificates. Sources said the ministry had anticipated such a possibility and, therefore, the review committee’s questionnaire had asked each institute to furnish details of past and present students. ‘‘Back-dated degrees cannot be given now,’’ a source said.

Meanwhile, HRD ministry is waiting for the next hearing in Supreme Court on January 25 before it starts issuing notices to these 44 deemed universities.

Trying to get legal sanction to Mr Sibal’s action of revoking the deemed university status to those institutions, which had “abysmal” infrastructure facilities, the government counsel stated that such institutions were not eligible to be elevated to the level of university in any manner.

The government counsel told Justices Dalveer Bhandari and A.K. Patnaik that while approving the grant of deemed university status to only 36 institutions, 44 others had been put on “watch list” for three years to see whether they improve their standard, infrastructure and teaching facilities.

But the deemed university status of 44 other institutions had been “derecognised” as they did not qualify for elevation by any standard.

Universities run by some of the top guns in Tamil Nadu, such as Union minister S. Jagathrakshakan, AIADMK Lok Sabha member M. Thambidurai and the Dravida Kazhagam leader K. Veeramani have been recommended for withdrawal of the “deemed university” status by the Union HRD ministry, as the state earned the dubious distinction of earning the “highest score” of 16 of its varsities in the national ‘black-list’ of 44.
